As rainfall continued Tuesday, Alexandria could see coastal flooding impacts along the Potomac River through most of the week.
The National Weather Service extended the Coastal Flood Advisory for Alexandria to 2 p.m. Thursday. The risk of coastal flooding on the Potomac River shoreline is greater during high tide. The next high tides will be 6:25 p.m. Tuesday and 6:38 a.m. Wednesday.
“Water is expected to approach the curb near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street in Alexandria,” the NWS said.
There is also a Coastal Flood Watch from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning, especially around high tide.
Alexandria was not spared from inland stormwater flooding during Monday’s rain, as water-covered streets were reported in the area of Glebe Road and Commonwealth Avenue. That’s where the city is preparing a major stormwater capacity upgrade project to address flash flooding during significant rainfall.

Forecasters expect chances of rain to continue through Wednesday, with odds decreasing by Thursday.

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
