AFD reported on social media at 1:40 p.m. that the fire was out, that no one was injured and asked the public to avoid the area.
The Alexandria Police Department notified the public via social media at 1:45 p.m. that the 100–300 blocks of S. Union Street and the 100 block of Prince Street are temporarily closed.
The townhouse was built in 1973 and is not a historic structure, according to city land records.
AFD said that the fire was determined to be accidental and electrical in nature.
“Investigators found the fire originated in a second-floor room and was related to the improper use of electrical components, including surge protectors, extension cords, and outlet adapters,” AFD told ALXnow. “Fire damage was primarily contained to the room of origin, with some smoke and water damage in other areas of the home. The fire was extinguished quickly by responding crews.”
The building was not condemned and was turned back over to the homeowner.
